The first official representation of the Russian Orthodox Church in Canada took place on July 18, 1897, at Wostok, Alberta. Now there is not much of anything. There was a rail line through here. It is not on any major or secondary highway. A few miles on a gravel road south on Range Road 173 off Highway 45 west of Andrew, Alberta will get you here. The area was settled by Slavic immigrants from Central Europe. You can still see their influence, mainly through the many distinctive churches that are here.
This is looking west as you drive into Wostok. Buildings are only on one side of the road. An old rail line runs through the trees off to the left.
Long abandoned.
The hall still sees use. There are very few houses. I do not usually take photos of homes where people are living, I do my best to respect their privacy.
That TV antenna looks strangely out of place...
