Bighorn Falls

Clearwater County, Alberta. A couple of people I know had never been here so I took them along. I have visited it a few times and posted it previously. It is one of those places I like to revisit.

Bear Falls.

Bighorn Falls in Clearwater County, Alberta. There is a small parking area where a bridge crosses Bighorn Creek. Last Saturday June 26, 2021 it was over 30C. There are two ways to the falls. I was here once before and only saw them from above. This time I walked alongside the creek and then most of the way in the creek. I was barefoot in my runners and it felt great. It was only about one kilometre distance to get there.

You can walk right up to the base of the falls. For being in the middle of nowhere it is a popular place. There were a couple of family groups enjoying cooling off when I was there. From where I live it is a day trip, about three hours and a bit one way.

Bridal Veil Falls and Panther Falls

Bridal Veil Falls.

Panther Falls. This time I got as close as I wanted. Prior trips I could not get as close. I did not get to the base of the falls because I would have got soaked. I did get a bit below the falls.

Managed to catch a rainbow in the mist on this one.

Stanley Falls September 5, 2020

South of Jasper, Alberta just off Highway 93. There is a small parking lot where Beauty Creek meets the Athabasca River. To get to the falls there is a trail that follows the creek. The trail is only 1.6km long but feels shorter. At about the halfway point the terrain goes transitions where the creek is in a deep chasm with sharp cliffs. It is an easy walk with nice scenery along the way.

The steep chasm opens up to where you get to see Stanley Falls. This has been on my list for a couple of years. You can walk down to the base of the falls.

Walk up from Stanley Falls and you can see more little waterfalls. There is a waterfall just below Stanley Falls. I could not get a photo of that one due to the steep rock walls.

Looking down to the valley. I made sure to get a drink. Well worth the trip.

Lundbreck Falls, March 29, 2020

I make a point of stopping here if I am in the area. I can never seem to get a photo of this place that I really like. The falls are not that attractive this time of year. The water coming over them is brown. The grass looks rusty. This is not a big waterfall. There is a viewing platform at the top and a set of stairs where you get walk right to the bottom of the falls.

This old highway bridge is very close downstream from the falls. They do not build them like this anymore.

Takakkaw Falls September 28, 2019

One of my favourite spots in British Columbia. This is about thirteen kilometres from Field off the Trans Canada Highway in Yoho National Park.

You can see the frost on the rock on either side of the falls.

There is a bridge where you can cross and get right to the base of the falls.

Panther Falls

I made another attempt at Panther Falls last Tuesday. This time I actually got to the falls. The trail is about 1/2km from the highway to the falls.

The falls are loud. The water is not so much falling as it is exploding off the top. You can get closer than this however this is about the closest I could get a photo due to the mist in the air. I might try it again in September.

Siffleur Falls

August 18, 2019 hike to Siffleur Falls west of Nordegg, Alberta. Hiked here with a friend.

My friend and I had tried this hike a couple of years ago. We had been at a different waterfall - Crescent Falls - before coming here. The problem was we got here too late in the day and did not make it to Siffleur Falls. We kept saying that we were going to go back and make it to the falls. It might have become a running joke between us. About a week ago I suggested it and my offer was accepted.

This is a neat hike. The suspension foot bridge is close to the parking lot. The bridge crosses the North Saskatchewan River.

Next is the boardwalk through an ecologically sensitive area.

There are signs warning you that you are in bear country. Never saw one.

The river is squeezed into a narrow space. The trail is along the top. The water does look turquoise.

The first set of falls is about 4km from the parking lot.

Wonderful scenery in this part of Alberta.

The second set of falls, about 2.5km from the first set. I actually was not far from the third set which was about a further 1.5km from here. Not far from the second set of falls the trail kind of fades out. Not being familiar with the area I was not going to go through brush to see how far we could get.

The weather was great and it was a fun outing. I might have to do it again. Glad I got to fulfill this with a friend.
