The site of Foley Timber School. There are two buildings here. The last time I was here a few years back it was winter.

Mayook Schoolhouse. Not all that far from Cranbrook, British Columbia.

The school operated from 1918 to 1952. The building was moved here in 1918 from Wardner. It was fixed up at its new location, a bell tower was added, the bell was donated and it was a former locomotive bell. It says on on the building.

The photos are not the best but this location has a bit of importance to me. I had planned to get out to see this on February 17, 2024. The day before I was involved in an accident that put me in the hospital for seven months. Getting to see this became a recovery goal. The trip took a lot for me to drive here. I used to do mad dashes to places to see things I wanted to see. I do not have the energy for that, trips this days will be at a slower pace.

Ghost town Saskatchewan

Dunkirk is a ghost town located south of Moose Jaw. The hamlet was the fourth waypoint on the mini-alphabet CPR rail line (Archives, Buttress, Crestwind) between Moose Jaw and Assiniboia.  The post office operated from 1913 to 1968. In its prime Dunkirk contained a number of businesses including two grain elevators and a school.  The slow demise of Dunkirk like many towns and hamlets on the prairies began during the depression.

Twin Buttes School 1904

South of Pincher Creek, Alberta and long abandoned.

Abandoned Alberta

Unknown abandoned school spotted by chance on a farmstead on the backroads southeast of Bruce, Alberta by Dale Redekopp.  Suspect it may have been moved here to be repurposed for some other use. Appears to be long abandoned.

 

Lyncot School 1916

This is about eight miles north of Stettler, Alberta just a little off the highway. I had driven past this for years without knowing it was there. It is up on a hill obscured by trees.

The sign at the side of the road says 1916. The school itself says 1917. Fieldstone schools in Alberta are rare, I think I have only encountered two. I am not sure if it is being used for anything these days.

About sixteen miles north of Tompkins, Saskatchewan.

Feldman Lake School 1890

This is the second Feldman Lake School on the original location. Very few rural schools in Alberta were brick. I have never seen windows like this in a rural school. I have usually seen in even smaller schools more windows and taller windows. I could not get a closer look as this one is on private property.

Feldman Lake School is southwest of Medicine Hat, Alberta.

I believe this is Arkona School near Coronation, Alberta built in 1907. The school is in bad shape and obscured by trees.

Abandoned Alberta

Former one room school in rural Alberta. I had been here once before in the dead of winter. Looks like it might have been a granary at one time.

 

Boule Creek School 1914 - 1963

This is south of Cadillac, Saskatchewan. I tried to get here this spring with a friend of mine Michael Truman.

We did not get there, the road was a bit soft. Even if we had ventured down the township road and then turned north up the range road it was on we likely would not have made it. This school is on a hill. With a soft road and a bit of a steep hill it could have been a problem. I visited it earlier this month on a hot day and a bone dry road.

No idea how either of us missed this one. Both of us had traveled the backroads of the Cadillac area many times and somehow managed to miss this school. My trip here was a solo trip. The inside is a mess, someone has used it for storage. Glad I got to see it before it disappears. 

Hearts of Oak School 1907 - 1957

Long abandoned stone one room school somewhere in the vicinity of Carlyle, Saskatchewan. The inside is not in great condition nor is the roof in good shape. The building though looks rock solid.

I had been after this one for a few years. The first time I was here the road had snowdrifts. The second time was in the spring and it had rained recently and the road was soft. This time I went in mid July and there was no damn snow or soft roads to worry about this time. This is one of my favourite one room schools to date.

Rock Lily School 1908 - 1957

Not foo far from Penzance, Saskatchewan. I have been to Penzance, sadly no pirates.

Last Friday after work I headed out on a road trip. I kept driving and did not feel tired so I kept driving. I got here before dawn and waited for the sun to rise. I had a short catnap in the car. The colour is a little different in some photos due to the light and the haze from wildfires from Alberta did not help. If nothing else I got a very early start to a day of exploring.

The school is mainly stone construction and is in poor shape. I really like this one and spent about an hour looking it over. I did not go inside as it definitely looks unsafe.
