Church of St. Claire

While on a bus tour through Ontario, I grabbed a couple of quick photos of the abandoned Church of St. Claire in Upsala, Ontario.

This lovely old wooden church has seen better days. It sits near the CP main line through Ontario. I'm not sure when the church was built but it seems certain it was in the 1920s.

Upsala is named after the city in Sweden - Uppsala. Some of the founders of the town had Scandinavian-sounding last names like Nordal, Nordstrom, Hakanson, and Greenlund.

Upsala - Not in Sweden

On a recent loooong drive between Winnipeg and Toronto, I noted an abandoned church in Upsala, Ontario. On our way back, I stopped briefly to take a long distance photo of the church.

I believe this is/was a Catholic church.

Upsala is a well known city and region in Sweden. Upsala, Ontario wasn't settled by Swedes but by 1900 there was a strong Swedish influence in the town and many Scandinavians lived in and around the town.

St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church

This impressive church is the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic church, located in Kenora, Ontario. It is located at the top of a hill overlooking the town, and features the signature bell tower that most if not all Ukrainian churches have.

The sign under the steps has the two dates "1955 1958" on it.

I wish I had more time to look inside the church - maybe next time.
