Stone house near Tofield, Alberta May 20, 2017

I read that this was built in 1924/1925 and then abandoned sometime in the 1940's. You do not see many stone buildings in Alberta. It is a very tiny house and it has a staircase to the upper level.

A reader of my blog pointed this place out to me via email. As to the location all I will say is that it is a rural area north of Tofield, Alberta.

Inside you can see the stairway.

  2. I'm curious why you don't tell people how to go see the buildings you photograph. Are you concerned about vandalism?

Here the greatest threat to old buildings is the appetite of developers who renovate the buildings for profit.

    1. Concerned about many things. There are souvenir hunters and vandals. It has become a bit of a problem. With the downturn in the Alberta economy there has also been a lot of theft.

    2. I figured there had to be some similar reason. The terrain looks so desolate and empty, but I guess people could drive out there just to run a metal detector over it. I have a brother who is big into that.

  4. Happy to see more pics of this place... the one on IG intrigued me ... so much skill needed to construct this one... a real gem.

  5. What a neat stone house, thank you for sharing. I can understand your not wanting to give the location, too many vandals these days.
Locally we have old stacked stone walls built years ago by the first settlers and the Chinese. Now they are being destroyed by vandalism and stolen by landscapers...sigh
