Abandoned church in Altario, Alberta

Encountered on April 2, 2016. Altario is practically a ghost town. No names on the church to tell what denomination or when it was built. I am somewhat religious. I do not like to see churches abandoned or dying. When people arrived to settle a place the first few buildings they put up were a church and a school. These buildings represented a sense of permanence and the future, something larger than themselves.

The top of the tower is missing. Someone probably has the bell.

The door was wide open when I found it.

This is as far as I ventured. Hopefully some of the interior went to someplace deserving.

You can see daylight at the bottom of the church. This is why I did not venture too far inside. With part of the foundation missing I did not want to test how safe the inside was. Now it is a home for birds.

  2. Goodness, what a sad little town. Couldn't find the church on G/E - A lot of that area is not on street view.

  3. I like this one! I love the windows, the wainscoting, the architectural similarities of the windows and what may have once been the altar. Great find an photos BW!
