It's good to see one not abandoned! I went looking for a picture of the inside of grain elevator & found this site. This is more than interesting and does touch on 'why' there are so many abandoned elevators...& the rest.
Technology changes everything over time, even grain elevators. You will never see a new one built like the old style ones. I have been inside one abandoned elevator. They are very solidly built.
