Bethel Baptist Cemetery

Three kilometres west of Campsie, Alberta.

Between 1908 and 1911 approximately one thousand black settlers emigrated from the United States to Alberta and settled in Wildwood, Amber Valley, Campsie, and Breton. This is a cemetery of black burials. The gate is right by the highway and easy to miss due to the trees and brush.

There is a cleared path that comes to a small clearing where the gravesites are. The markers are all the same and set into the ground. It is well kept.

  1. The museum in Barrhead (run by the society mentioned in the plaque) has the 3rd largest exhibition of African exhibits in Canada so there remains a connection to Africa in these parts. Nice autumn hues.
