This one was too good to pass up. This one did not care how close I got. I know someone who is really into birding and would have spent at least an hour taking photos of this woodpecker. I really need to buy a better camera.
world's largest woodpecker...about the size of a crow. Flies in deep, undulating swoops. See a pair a couple times a year up here in the Sierra Nevadas.
I like to watch birds when I encounter them. I'm borrowing a friend's dog after lunch today and I'm taking her down to Police Point Park for a long walk where we may encounter coyotes, beavers, deer, an array of smaller birds and maybe even a pileated woodpecker, owl or bald eagle. Nature is great!...and highly recommended!
Pileated Woodpecker - The old-timers here called them "Indian hens."
ReplyDeleteFriend has a sign with a pileated woodpecker painted on it... and the words: No Peckers Allowed!
ReplyDeleteCool bird

ReplyDeleteMy opinion: A Good picture
ReplyDeleteWoody Woodpecker!
ReplyDeleteThere have been a few pairs of pileated woodpeckers living in Police Point Park (a natural park in Medicine Hat) for the past five or six years now.
Being exposed to some other people's passions like birdwatching has kind of made try to notice birds when I am out.

DeleteBeautiful birds and lots of fun to watch. But they do a lot of damage to our trees. Great photo, BW!
