This is near Duncan, British Columbia.
Completed in 1870 by Roman Catholic missionary Father Peter Rondeault and only used for ten years. It was called the Stone Butter Church as the labour was paid for with butter churned from Father Rondeault's cows.
A friend who is visiting Vancouver Island sent this to me.
Good story in the name of the church!
ReplyDeleteYou should come out this way sometime!
ReplyDeleteWould love to make it back to Ucluelet. One of these days . . .
DeleteGreat old church. Might I suggest a picnic table?
ReplyDeleteFun fact: In 1931, Ripley’s Believe it or Not did a story on the church stating that it was never officially used and that every worker who helped build the structure died mysteriously. This was not true, but gave the church a haunted title with the locals.
ReplyDeleteMust have kept somebody busy churning enough butter to pay for it.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful old, simple church, too bad it wasn't maintained. A nice chapel for some reflective thought and meditation.
ReplyDeleteI wish I missed last pic,can see the idiot damage thru said window, cool church still.

I am not a fan of taggers. I love the look of this church.
