Let's Take a Little Trip...

. . . from Red Rock Coulee to Saint Anthony's Church and Cemetery. I drive this route every so often and the photos here are a collection of favourites.

Red Rock Coulee is about an hour southwest of Medicine Hat, Alberta where I live. These shots were taken in mid-fall on a day that I'd decided was just too nice to spend working.  Even after dozens of visits over many years it's still a fascinating place.

Just southeast of Red Rock Coulee is Ebenezer Cemetery with its white-painted fence posts.  Not so long ago there was also a United Church here.

As soon as I stepped out of the car I noticed three horses (upper right and just below the horizon) galloping over to see what was happening. I had a few sugar cubes for them and we were instantly best buddies.

I liked this shot of them in the distance.

South and west to Saint Gabriel's Catholic Church in Etzikom, Alberta. The church was to be demolished when a man from the community stepped in and purchased it. His plan was to give it a fresh coat of paint the following year but over the winter he became ill and died from cancer.

A few photos of the Etzikom Museum & Historic Windmill Centre. Probably the best collection of historical windmills (especially water-pumpers) anywhere in Canada.

Also at the Etzikom Museum is the refurbished "Nodwell Service" complete with historical gas pumps.  Beside the service station is Saint Saviour's Anglican Church which is in its original condition from 1914.

Etzikom Cemetery is just north of town.

About ten miles further north is Prospy Cemetery with its cairn of white stone.

Last stop for the day is Saint Anthony's Church and Cemetery in the Maleb (aka Conquerville) area.  I haven't been out here for a while but I've heard the church has been dismantled.

A pane of glass from one of the windows had fallen to rest beside the foundation and created a nice backdrop for the resident bunny.

The original bell from the church now sits on top of a stone cairn in the cemetery.

Saint Anthony's Cemetery at sunset.

Sometimes it's just the best idea to take the afternoon off.

  1. Etzikom has been on my list for years and I still have not made it there.
Sad that the man who owned the church passed away.

  7. Awwww, that bunny photo is so cute! That's a part of the province that I am not at all familiar with. I need to take my own road trip there some time and poke around!

  9. I like the photos of the horses and the windmills too. I wish we had gone through Medicine Hat when we travelled through that part but we went through Drumheller which was interesting too. It's a pity we couldn't do everything but time is always limited when on holiday. Thanks for the photos.

  10. All these photos are great. I especially liked the horses and the old cemeteries but my favourite was Saint Savior's Anglican church. Such a unique look for a church.
