Shaftesbury Ferry August 1, 2015

Highway 740 takes you there and the ferry takes you across the Peace River. The first ferry crossing here was built by a farmer in 1951 and the family operated it until the government took it over in 1977.

The road heading into the valley suffered a slide at one point. The detour is just to the side.

I was a little hesitant. The dock was slightly chewed up and a little uneven to get onto the ferry. If I was driving a car I would not care. It is a little different on a motorcycle for highway use.

This is not a cable ferry. The ferry is manoeuvred by a tugboat. The tug and barge were built in 1962.

Off in the bushes. Personally I am not sure if I would want to drive across the ice in winter.

View from the hill overlooking the crossing. You can make out the ferry on the river.

  1. Interesting trip - all sorts of obstructions in your way. Love the red tugboat.

  2. Interesting ferry. Looks like a bridge laid across 2 boats.
important thing is that it works, longer than we've been around.

    1. Your observation is correct. It works and gets a fair amount of traffic.
