I have posted this subject before. I took a photo of this last summer. I was driving by and I thought it deserved another look in the winter.

What happened to all of the towns?

I often wondered what happened to a lot of these places. A lot of small Alberta places were barely more than settlements and never reached enough critical mass to survive hard times. Others disappeared when the railroad left and there was nothing else to sustain them. Drought took care of some others. I have been working my way through the resources section of forgottenalberta.com and perusing the links. Copies of the linked resources are scanned and posted online at his website.

I have met the author of forgottenalberta.com and I am grateful for the links he has posted. The links lead to books by various authors, maps, and some databases. It is a lot to go through. Some of the places that I posted about I cannot readily find stuff online. I would like to have the time to go through some archives and find out more about some of them.

Senkiw Church, north and east of Hanna, Alberta

Through some internet exploration I found this place and I finally made it here on January 30, 2016. There is nothing left of the town. The church was restored in 1976. From what I could find it is no longer used. It was named Senkiw by the original settlers in memory of their village in what is now western Ukraine. Apparently whatever town that had existed disappeared during the depression when everyone moved away.

This is a very small church and is one of those hidden rural gems. The church is locked and boared up. I would have loved to get a look inside. This is an amazing little spot. I could not decide what photos I wanted to post so I posted them all. I will be back in the summer.
