Things you do not expect

I have been in the hospital since the evening of February 16. There are a lot of things you are cut off from being in the hospital. A lot of simple things.

One of the things I miss is Coke. I love the stuff. After weeks of being in the hospital I got my hands on a bottle. I took a swig and I was . . . disappointed. It did not taste the same. It did not taste the way I remembered it. That was a few weeks ago. I have had a few more since then, I had one today. It is just not the same.

I find the same thing for coffee. I like my coffee triple cream one sugar. I usually had a cup or two every day. In my entire hospital stay I have had five cups of coffee. It is not the same either, granted hospital coffee is not good coffee. Maybe I will enjoy it once I get out and have better coffee. Maybe it will be cut out of my diet entirely.

  1. Unexpected changes? Maybe once you get back on your feet things will slide even closer to normal?

  2. I have had a similar experience if for a different reason. I went almost right from Mothers Milk to Pepsi. Then for health reasons, I stopped drinking any soda with caffeine ( and very few without). After stopping entirely for several years I now....rarely have a Coke. It doesnt taste " right" but I do have one now and then. Pepsi, however, just tastes Awful . I tried getting a Mexican Coke ( Sugar used for a sweetener). It is a bit better but still not what I remember.

  3. Maybe your taste buds are still in shock from the accident!

  4. Born in Atlanta, I was weaned on coke. As an adult had a one a day habit for 35 years, fountain cokes from certain restaurants would beckon me from across town. Had to cut out all of that fun and change the whole diet plan, no coke for me. After a few months of intermittent fasting and cutting out refined sugar I thought I would treat myself to a total cheat meal including burger, fries, and frosty coke over ice. Just kept waiting for that coke magic . never came. Don't suppose its really a loss, but I miss it. Also went to black coffee without sugar. Same thing when I went for a fatty coffee, didn't have anything special about it anymore. Beer. Beer tastes better than ever, even if I'm limited to one or two at a sit. Maybe once you've recovered and are out and about your palate will reset to factory settings and coke will be fantastic again. You know everything will taste better when your life is back to normal.

  5. A few times in my life a drug I needed to take really affected my tasre buds but after the treatments were successful and the medicines went away my taste preferences came right back. Good luck.

  6. Luckily for me I never developed a taste for pop of any kind. Coffee is an entirely different matter, but I do try to stick to 2 cups a day.
