Windmills

You do not really realize how big these things are until you drive up to one. I have stated before I really do not like these things. I am a firm believer that they are a blight on the landscape. I also think millions have been wasted on them with no clear benefit. No matter, it is only my opinion and I do not make these decisions.

  1. I have only seen those windmills from a distance and did not realize just how huge they are. I agree about the blight on the landscape. From what I have read, it seems that many birds die from flying into the blades. I am surprised that some birding society hasn't kicked up a fuss about that, especially where eagles and hawks are the victims.

  2. So you're not a big fan of these? Ha!

I am always amazed by their size when I see them up close.

  3. blight on the landscape...and all those cell phone towers .. micro wave repeaters ... high tension electric transmission lines .. highways and roads aren't??? you can't get "pristine" landscape outside backwoods Alaska anymore these days.
for me, there are few things more relaxing than watching wind generators slowly spinning .. rates right up there with waves lapping on the beach, wheat rippling in the breeze and clouds rolling across the sky.
the myth of wind generaters being quezinarts in the sky was started with the alamount pass wind site. it used old fashioned open lattice towers..an invitation for birds to land...and small high speed blades. sometimes you could not see the blades they were moving so fast.
todays generators, like the picture, use enclosed bases and the huge blades are limited in there maximum speed. one study showed that more birds were killed by car windshields than by MODERN wind generators. I personally have watched flocks of hundreds of migrating snow and blue geese fly thru the blades of several wind turbines to land in corn fields to feed without a single one being killed or injured.
but if you think a basically free source of clean endless fuel is a bad idea, well you are entitled to your opinion and I would never try to change it.

    1. I am not against better and cleaner energy. Nor do I necessarily believe they are avian murder machines. I am not sure at this time if they deliver on their promise (they may at some time in the future) and from an aesthetic point of view I am not a fan.

  4. I saw a lot of these when I lived in California and was totally shocked at the size. I've also seen some in rural Indiana. I'm in agreement with you... not a fan. I know the arguments for clean energy but I'm not convinced yet. Figures I've seen make this type of energy quite expensive. I'm sure this will annoy xtron but I also don't buy into the global warming hype either. I respect that others have their opinions and I have mine and I'm sure we can all find "facts" and "figures" to support our opinions, which underscores that the science isn't settled.

    Nice picture BW!
