Iowalta School 1901 - 1956

Named after Alberta and Iowa settlers. Stumbled across this on the way home. The school is abandoned. Nature is starting to claim it.

If the sign is legitimate I think it is referring to the political climate and an election in Alberta. The Progressive Party of Canada was linked with United Farmers parties in Canadian provinces. The United Farmers were re-elected in 1930 and wiped out in the 1935 election. The Depression was hard on Alberta farms and voters had concerns that the government was not doing enough to help them at the time.

  1. "Iowalta" is actually quite a melodious name, isn't it. If I remember my history correctly, the Progressive Party eventually merged with the Conservatives to form the Progressive Conservatives.

  2. Looks like it was a well-built structure. It's a shame it's on its way out.

  3. Such a shame no one is stepping up to preserve this building with it's history.

  4. Fifty-six years is a good run for a country school. I think the only one I've seen (in Alberta) that had a longer run is Cypress School which was open for fifty-eight years.
