Open road

"It's a perennial gift, motorcycling. It doesn't get old. The same roads don't get tiresome."

Neil Peart

There will always be someone somewhere that can articulate things better then you can. This summer Alberta weather has not been kind to those who ride motorcycles. No matter. This weekend I will hit the highway again. Neil Peart rides and I think some of his experiences from riding and life come out in this song. I know what he says about the song, I see it in kind of the same way. "Time Stand Still" by Rush always plays as a mental soundtrack when I put on the helmet and hit the starter. There are times I think this song is perfect. I will be spending time with a drink and a friend. There are perfect moments in time in the past and in the future that I wish I could freeze and revisit just because I want to relive the experience all over again. You can't of course. There are days you wish time could stand still.

I turn my back to the wind
To catch my breath,
Before I start off again
Driven on,
Without a moment to spend
To pass an evening
With a drink and a friend

I let my skin get too thin
I'd like to pause,
No matter what I pretend
Like some pilgrim
Who learns to transcend
Learns to live
As if each step was the end

Time stand still
I'm not looking back
But I want to look around me now
Time stands still
See more of the people
And the places that surround me now

Time stands still

Freeze this moment
A little bit longer
Make each sensation
A little bit stronger

Experience slips away
Experience slips away

Time stands still

I turn my face to the sun
Close my eyes,
Let my defenses down
All those wounds
That I can't get unwound

I let my past go too fast
No time to pause
If I could slow it all down
Like some captain,
Whose ship runs aground
I can wait until the tide comes around

Time stand still

I'm not looking back
But I want to look around me now
Time stands still
See more of the people
And the places that surround me now

Freeze this moment
A little bit longer
Make each sensation
A little bit stronger

Make each impression
A little bit stronger
Freeze this motion
A little bit longer

The innocence slips away
The innocence slips away

Time stands still
Time stands still

I'm not looking back
But I want to look around me now
See more of the people
And the places that surround me now

Time stands still

Summer's going fast
Nights growing colder
Children growing up
Old friends growing older

Freeze this moment
A little bit longer
Make each sensation
A little bit stronger

Experience slips away
Experience slips away
The innocence slips away

  1. Reminded me of a book a friend lent me about Neil Peart,
Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road. I need to get a copy and read it again.

    1. Right. I know of the book and I should read it. I watched the documentary about Rush "Beyond The Lighted Stage" and really enjoyed it. It details his experiences leading to writing the book. I keep meaning to look for it.

  2. An old familiar road was once an unknown; but the anticipation of traveling down it is an awesome adventure. Just like going through life, see what's over the next hill. Make lots and lots of memories, BW!
