Reposted and Updated - Request for suggestions regarding a proposed Montana trip

I posted this before and I thought I would post it again with a few changes and updates. I received some great ideas from a few people that managed to find this site and I am grateful for hearing from them. Since the time I posted it last time and now, I may have picked up another reader or two that may have a few suggestions. Or not.

A good friend and I are planning a trip from about July 1 – 8th of this year from Alberta to Montana. and fitting in a bit of British Columbia. My only real goals for this is to ride over the Beartooth Highway and the Going-To-The-Sun Road. Everything else is totally open.

Some revised thoughts.

We have now thought of crossing the border south of Milk River, Alberta and head towards Great Falls on I15 and to Butte on the same highway. From Butte on I90 to Laurel, then take the 212 (the Beartooth Highway is kind of the major point of this trip) over to Ennis, then to Hamilton to Missoula, Kalispell, Hungry Horse (been there years ago, a must stop for anything Huckleberry and the Hungry Horse dam), the Going-To-The-Sun Road (the other major point of this trip), then Highway 17 back across the Canadian border. The plans are not set in stone.

  1. I would hit bozemen then head down on 84 to the 287 to Ennis then go over to virginia city then the 41 down to Dillon you can go south and catch Yellowstone if you have time then take the 278 from Dillon to the 41 over to the 93 and then come North to Missoula...You can stop in Hamilton and I will buy you a meal...

  2. I really appreciate the information and the invite. Feel free to email me at the following address: bartholomew.wolfe.bandy@gmail.com (I really don't know why my email does not show up on the blog).

I have been to Kallspell and Whitefish several times years ago and I have been on the Going-To-The-Sun Road twice. Once I drove up from Phoenix after flying down to meet someone and came up north on I15 to 287 to 89 through Browning. That is the extent of my Montana experience. Any and all advice is appreciated.

  3. St. Ignatius Church in St. Ignatius, 45 miles north of Missoula. Beautiful collection of 58 murals inside done by the cook/handyman of the church about 100 years ago.

  5. Tried to remove a duplicate comment above. Apparently I still need to learn a few things about tidying up things.
